Coping with Homesickness in Medellín: Expert Tips for Expats and Digital Nomads

Happy Holidays to all! Moving to a new city, especially one as dynamic as Medellín can be an exhilarating experience. With its spring-like weather, breathtaking landscapes, and warm people, it’s easy to fall in love with Medellin. However, even the most adventurous spirits can find themselves missing the comfort of home—especially during the holiday season. A friend from back home recently moved to New Zealand with her family and as this is her first year there, the struggles she is experiencing made me think about what I have done to combat this. I hope this also works for her.

As someone who made the move to Medellín eight years ago, I understand how homesickness can sneak up on you, no matter how exciting your new surroundings are. Over the years, I’ve discovered a variety of strategies that not only help combat homesickness but also deepen your connection to your new home. Whether you’re a digital nomad, an expat, or simply spending an extended time in Medellín, these tips can help you navigate those moments when you long for home.

1. Create Comfort Through Food

Food has a magical way of connecting us to our roots. If you’re feeling homesick, recreating your favorite dishes from home can provide immense comfort. Many grocery stores in Medellín, such as Carulla and Exito, carry international ingredients, and specialty stores like Bodegon de la Frontera, in CC La Frontera can be treasure troves for harder-to-find items.

If you’re celebrating the holidays, try making traditional dishes from your culture and inviting friends or neighbors to share the meal. Not only will this give you a taste of home, but it’s also an opportunity to share your traditions with others. If cooking isn’t your forte, Medellín’s growing international food scene has got you covered. For example, restaurants like Philly Steaks Medellin offer dishes that might remind you of home, while expat-run bakeries often serve seasonal treats like pumpkin pie or gingerbread cookies during the holidays. Baruch Bagels will keep you in bagels and schmear for those moments you feel like a bagel.

Pro tip: Join Facebook groups or WhatsApp communities for expats in Medellín. Members often share where to find specific ingredients or recommend local chefs who can whip up dishes from your homeland.

2. Build a Supportive Community

One of the best ways to overcome homesickness is by fostering a sense of belonging in your new city. Medellín has a thriving expat and digital nomad community, and there are plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.

Here are some ways to build your community:

  • Join Meetups and Events: Platforms like Meetup.com, Internations, and local Facebook groups often host gatherings, workshops, and social events tailored to expats and nomads.

  • Volunteer: Giving back is a wonderful way to feel connected. Organizations like Fundación Marina Orth or Angels of Medellín welcome volunteers for various projects.

  • Co-Working Spaces: Places like Selina or Global Express not only offer a productive work environment but also host networking events and happy hours where you can meet others.

Especially during the holiday season, keep an eye out for themed events like Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas markets, or New Year’s Eve celebrations organized by the expat community.

3. Embrace Colombian Culture

Sometimes the best way to ease homesickness is by immersing yourself in the culture of your new home. Medellín is rich in traditions, especially during the holiday season.

  • Explore the Alumbrados Navideños: Medellín’s Christmas lights display is world-famous. Walking through the illuminated streets and parks can fill you with a sense of joy and holiday spirit.

  • Learn to Dance: Salsa and bachata classes are not only fun but also a great way to meet people. Local dance schools like Santo Baile offer classes for all levels.

  • Celebrate with Locals: Colombians are incredibly warm and welcoming. Accept invitations to local holiday celebrations like Novena de Aguinaldos, a traditional nine-day gathering leading up to Christmas.

  • Participate in Chartiy: There is nothing more fulfilling that putting a smile on someone's face for the holiday season. This goes for all season, not just during the holidays. I volunteer teaching baseball to the Colombian youth all year, you can find your niche.

4. Stay Connected to Loved Ones

While it’s important to build a life in Medellín, maintaining connections with loved ones back home can provide a much-needed emotional anchor.

  • Schedule Regular Calls: Use apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, or FaceTime to set up weekly video calls with family and friends.

  • Share Your Journey: Start a blog, YouTube channel, or Instagram account to document your experiences. Not only does this keep your loved ones in the loop, but it also helps you reflect on the positive aspects of your new life.

  • Exchange Care Packages: Send and receive packages with family or friends. Receiving a box of your favorite snacks or keepsakes from home can be incredibly uplifting.

5. Create New Traditions

One way to make a place feel like home is to create your own traditions. These can be a blend of your old customs and new experiences in Medellín.

  • Host a Potluck: Invite friends to bring dishes that represent their culture or background. This can become an annual holiday tradition.

  • Explore Nature: Take advantage of Medellín’s proximity to stunning landscapes. A Christmas morning hike in Parque Arví or a weekend trip to Guatapé can become a cherished tradition.

  • Personalize Your Space: Decorate your apartment or house to reflect your personality and heritage. Having familiar items around can make a big difference.

6. Prioritize Your Mental and Physical Health

Homesickness can sometimes take a toll on your well-being, so it’s essential to care for your mental and physical health.

  • Stay Active: Join a gym, try yoga at Flying Tree Yoga, or go for a run in Ciudad del Río Park. Exercise releases endorphins that can help boost your mood.

  • Seek Professional Support: If homesickness becomes overwhelming, consider speaking with a therapist. Medellín has English-speaking counselors and psychologists who specialize in helping expats adjust.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Apps like Headspace or Insight Timer can help you incorporate meditation or mindfulness practices into your daily routine.

7. Travel Within Colombia

Sometimes a change of scenery within your host country can reignite your sense of adventure. Colombia is incredibly diverse, and a weekend getaway might be just what you need to recharge.

  • Beach Escape: Visit Cartagena or Santa Marta for a dose of sun and sand.

  • Coffee Region: Head to Salento or Manizales to explore lush coffee plantations and scenic views.

  • Adventure Trips: For thrill-seekers, San Gil offers activities like white-water rafting and paragliding.

Final Thoughts

Homesickness is a natural part of adjusting to life in a new place, but it doesn’t have to overshadow your experience in Medellín. By focusing on food, community, culture, and self-care, you can transform those moments of longing into opportunities for growth and connection.

Remember, it’s okay to miss home while still embracing your new life. Don't lose who you are, and don'tt be afraid to mix your culture with Colombian culture
